Tension is rising in Cyprus, / Tensions are rising in Cyprus, where a 26-year-old Greek Cypriot was killed yesterday on the ‘green line’ which has cut/divided the island, including the capital, in (into) two from east to west since 1974. The two Cypriot communities began to class last Sunday/ have been clashing since last Sunday and over/more than 50 people have been wounded in the fighting up to now.

Yesterday’s riots were reportedly/apparently/ seemingly caused by a Turkish-Cypriot soldier who accused some/a group of Greek Cypriots of destroying one of their flags. It seems that/Apparently about/approximately/around a hundred Greek-Cypriots/of them invaded the buffer/neutral zone (created) around the ‘green line’ and that the first gunshots/rifle-shot s were fired from there.

The Greek Prime Minister declared/stated/said that he would make a formal protest to the U.N. and that he would take all the initiatives necessary to resolve the Cypriot issue once and for all/ to definitively resolve the Cypriot issue. On the other hand/In contrast when the Turkish prime minister spoke to journalists on/upon his arrival at the Singapore Airport/ the aiport in Singapore, he said, "we deeply regret what happened in Cyprus. Unfortunately at the present time/ in the current climate an insult to a national flag is enough to trigger an unprecedented conflict."
