Since 1974 the so-called “green line” has cut/divided Cyprus – including the capital – in two, from east to west. The two Cypriot communities began/started clashing / to clash last Sunday / have been clashing since Last Sunday. Over / More than 50 people have been wounded/ injured in the fighting up to now. Yesterday a 26-year-old Greek Cypriot was killed on the “green line.” Tensions continue to rise / are still rising.

The riots yesterday were reportedly caused / the rioting yesterday was reportedly caused by a Turkish Cypriot soldier who accused a group of Greek Cyriots of destroying one of his nation’s flags. It seems [that] about/approximately/roughly a hundred Greek Cyriots entered/invaded/stormed the buffer zone around/surrounding the “Green line” and from there the first gun shots were fired.  

The Greek Prime Minister declared/stated/said [that] he would make a formal protest to the United Nations (OR: the U.N.), and that he would take all the initiatives necessary to resolve the problems in Cyprus / the Cypriot question/issue/problem once and for all // all the initiatives necessary to definitely resolve the problems in Cyprus.
