The recession, which [had] got worse/ worsened in 1991,
[had] caused a 5% increase in prices, high unemployment, especially among young
people, and widespread fear of losing one’s job. On Tuesday, February 25, the
Prime Minister met with / had a meeting with business and labor union leaders.
The aims/goals/objectives of the meeting were to contain/lower inflation and
reduce public/state/national debt. The Prime Minister proposed sweeping/
large-scale reforms and assured everyone that he would take all necessary
measures to bring the economic situation back under control.

On Saturday a well-informed/ reliable source from the German
secret services spoke with the ANSA press agency. According to the source, the “Topaz”
case is the most serious spy scandal in NATO’s history / the history of NATO. “Topaz”
was the code name secretly used for years by Ranier Rupp, who was / a high-ranking
NATO official. Apparently/ It seems he [had] regularly passed information about
NATO to the government in Moscow / the Russian/ Soviet government. Rupp [had] fled
abroad on December 23, 1991 and was/ had been sought [by authorities] since the
beginning of 1992 // and authorities were/ had been looking for/ searching for
him since the beginning of 1992. Last Saturday / On Saturday he was arrested.
